A layer mask will allow you to modify the opacity (Transparency) of the layer they belong to. A clipping mask will allow you to apply a mask to many layers at once. The difference is that clipping mask will allow you to hide portions of a mask and are created with multiple layers, while a clipping mask only uses a single layer.
This blog post will cover 7 tips that will help you use Layer Masks in photoshop. Tip number one helps when painting on a mask. Press D to set colors to black and white, black will hide and white will reveal, you can press x to switch between the two. Tip number two will deal with adding a full mask. Alt click the Add Mask icon in the layers panel for a black mask that hides the layer or you can make your white mask inverted to black. Tip number three covers viewing a mask, alt click a layer mask thumbnail to toggle a view that shows the layer mask instead of the image. Our fourth tip is about painting with an overlay. Set the brush to blend mode to overlay. The fifth tip covers copying masks, hold alt and drag a layer mask thumbnail from one to another to copy it over. Tip number six is about the refine mask feature. Right click a mask thumbnail and choose refine mask to access a near identical set of controls which let you improve the mask. Our final tip, number seven covers unlinking a mask. Click the little link between layer and mask thumbnails in the Layers Panel to toggle it off. This lets you move the layer contents or masks independently of one another.
